Relics

DISCLAIMER: Relic hunting is DANGEROUS BUSINESS. Do NOT engage in this practice if you are not prepared. We will not restore ANY items that are destroyed because they were left on a relic, including tradesman items. It's your responsibility to safeguard your possessions before embarking on this task.

Getting Prepared:
If you want to hunt relics, the following pieces of equipment will be invaluable to you.
[*] A spacesuit, spacesuit navaid, and jet. (This is ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED. Explanation below.)
 * A stun gun with plenty of ammo.
 * A pulse emitter with plenty of energy packs.
 * A starship equipped with a medical bay.
  * Difficult relics and above may also contain space defenses. A starship with adequate weaponry is advised if you intend to venture far.
  * Airlock cycle upgrades are handy for getting out in a hurry.
 * A medical drone or two.
 * A friend or five for difficult-insane relics.
 * A telescope for peering around for guard activity. [Alternatively, a droid on remote could perform this function.]
 * An artifact storage container.

Recommended Equipment:
Purchasing an Ameliorator is recommended if you intend to salvage any ships that may encounter problems with relic self-destruction systems. This way you can dock the ship on the Ameliorator and return home rather than self-destruct the ship, or use the Ameliorator's component replacement ability to repair your ship.

It's also recommended to purchase a spatial anomaly scanner so that you can receive credit for scanning a relic.

What is a relic:
A relic is a leftover space structure from an alien race. Basically, these alien space stations contain a multitude of valuable trinkets as well as formidable defenses. You dock with the station, most of which have an automatic self-destruct sequence, go outside, and fight the internal defenses to collect artifacts and make it back to your ship before the station explodes. Be warned, though, that the guards may be capable of inflicting more than just stun damage on you. However, if you succeed, you will be richly rewarded with space trash and cultural wonders.

Procedure:
* Fly around outside in uncharted space. The further you venture from the known sectors, the more difficult and rewarding the relics will become.
* When your computer reports the presence of a relic, stop and scan it. Scanning may provide useful information that you should take note of, including the activation of any self-destruct sequences or space based defenses.
* If the relic begins deploying space defenses, such as automated attack drones or starships, you have two options. The first is to fire on the relic itself to destroy the launch mechanism, though this carries the risk of destroying the relic or damaging it. The second option is to destroy the defenses as they appear. Most relics aren't capable of producing replacements.
* Once any space defenses are taken care of, move to the relic and land on it. At this point, it's highly probable that an automated destruct sequence has begun.
* Exit your ship with any team and resources you feel appropriate. Should the docking bay be guarded by any sentries or automated defenses, destroy them with your stun gun or pulse emitter. Various types of ammunition may be more or less effective, depending on the originating race. Experiment.
* Walk around the relic collecting artifacts and anything else that may be of interest. Keep an eye out for items or descriptions in the room that may provide key details about the race the relic previously belonged to. It may come in handy someday when fighting them.
* Once you have seen and collected everything, return to your ship and fly away from the relic to avoid damage and injury.

WARNING: When a relic is destroyed, your starship will make an attempt to retrieve you and your belongings with a salvage line. Unfortunately, this is not a very precise measure and there is a chance that you may be hurled into space and some of your followers (droids, drones, pets) MAY be destroyed. If your belongings are left in a room with no humans near them, they will most assuredly be destroyed. It is critically important that you don't bring anything into the room that you don't want destroyed. (This does not apply to things you're wearing or carrying.) You should also keep in mind that rescuing people on the relic is the ship's first priority. While it's salvaging people, it won't allow you to launch until it deems the situation so bad that restricting launch would be more dangerous than saving the remaining crew. It's recommended that everybody be as close to the ship as possible during the self-destruct so that they can be quickly salvaged and launch the ship before the explosion causes damage.
